Sports Business Awards: Tech — Best in Fan Experience Technology

Evolv

Evolv Express

Using advanced sensor and artificial intelligence technologies to scan event-goers for weapons, Evolv Express is solving a pain point for sports venues by expediting fans’ ingress and secondary security screenings. The system’s capacity of 4,000 screenings per hour, Evolv says, is 10 times faster than metal detectors. Between the pro and college level, the company’s client list is approaching 50.

NASCAR

NASCAR Tracks App

Ahead of the inaugural Chicago Street Race Weekend in July, NASCAR developed an innovative streaming function for the NASCAR Tracks App in partnership with AWS, allowing attendees to livestream 60 unique feeds synced with audio of the radio broadcast. More than a quarter of the app’s unique visitors the week of the race entered the livestream screen on race day.

NBA

NBA App

The NBA is leaning further into personalization with each upgrade to its flagship app, recently introducing customized tabs, where fans can access team and player content specific to their interests, and a Moments function that lets users scroll troves of vertical video in a social media-style interface. The automated functions are powered by Microsoft Azure AI Services.

NHL

NHL Blast on Roblox

The NHL’s first Roblox experience featured compelling tech integrations. In addition to a core hockey game and customizable gear, the league partnered with Beyond Sports and The Gang to recreate highlights of goals from the Stanley Cup Final in 3D for users to immerse in, among other personalized features. Live game scores also were distributed via a digital jumbotron in the experience, a first for Roblox.

USGA

USGA App

The USGA brought coverage of each of its 15 championship events under one roof and codebase with a new app, built by Deloitte, that launched in April. The app unified fans’ access to live scoring, streaming, mobile ticketing and GPS wayfinding for the USGA’s men’s, women’s and amateur events — and saw record digital traffic.
