USL Riverhounds submit grant application to renovate, expand Highmark Stadium

Highmark Stadium's first phase of expansion would cost $15M and feature the construction of a rooftop terrace, among other buildsRiverhounds

Shallenberger Properties is requesting a $10M state redevelopment assistance capital grant to “help with a three-phase upgrade” of the USL Championship Pittsburgh Riverhounds' Highmark Stadium that could total as much as $75M, according to Mark Belko of the PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE. Shallenberger Properties, owned by Riverhounds owner Tuffy Shallenberger, owns the stadium and if all goes according to plan, the expansion would boost the stadium’s seating capacity from 5,500 to 15,000 and “add a slew of amenities to further enhance the venue.” The expansion’s first phase would cost $15M and feature the construction of a rooftop terrace with additional suite seating and improvements to the locker room, event center, and group event areas. During phase two, 1,200 seats would be added and corporate function space and facilities would be expanded. The last phase would involve the construction of another 8,300 seats and a new press box. Shallenberger Properties would “like to start the first phase in November and have it completed by next May.” Phase two is projected to be finished in May 2026, while phase three would wrap up in April 2028. The state redevelopment assistance grant would be “used exclusively for the first phase of expansion.” The club will be “facing some tough competition” for state redevelopment assistance grants in the latest round of funding, as the Riverhounds “likely won’t be the only Pittsburgh team eyeing upgrades to their playing venues in the next few years.” The Steelers and the Pirates also may be looking to make major improvements to Acrisure Stadium and PNC Park when their leases expire in 2031 and 2030 (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 3/14).
