Memphis AD hopeful recent NIL hires help push school further in space

Univ. of Memphis AD Laird Veatch feels like the the school is “competitive” in the ever-changing NIL landscape, but hopes two new hires can "further -- in collaboration with NIL partner Altius Sports Partners -- bolster those ongoing efforts," according to Omer Yusuf of the MEMPHIS BUSINESS JOURNAL. UM named Mark Greer as the school's in-house Altius NIL GM, where he is "responsible for overseeing all aspects of the school’s NIL program, MaximUM," while Camie Cole was named Altius athlete marketing manager, where she is "responsible for education, advocacy, and building connections between student-athletes and brands.” Veatch of Altius's role in UM NIL efforts said, “It's going to give us real focus ... and give us an opportunity when there is a trend, change, or things that we’re seeing at other places, we’ll be able to apply those at our place in a fast way.” Veatch said that Memphis is “currently in the upper tier” of the AAC in terms of NIL support. Yusuf noted UM currently has two official NIL collectives, the 901 Fund that "supports all sports at the university" and the Bluff City Collective, which "focuses on the men’s basketball team." One area for potential growth within NIL for Veatch is with "corporate sponsorships, as smaller businesses have embraced NIL a little more to this point.” He said that it has “taken that segment longer,” partially because corporations "look at this from 'a larger, more holistic view' and want to see a return on their investment" (MEMPHIS BUSINESS JOURNAL, 3/17).
