Authorities in the Dominican Republic announced yesterday the arrest of Venezuelan woman MARÍA FERNANDA VILLASMIL, who was long wanted in connection with the shooting that nearly killed Baseball HOFer DAVID ORTIZ in June 2019. Manzanilla was arrested Tuesday in the Dominican capital of Santo Domingo but it was not made clear what charges she is facing. She had been sought under “a red notice” since shortly after the shooting on June 9, 2019. In the months after the attack, Ortiz endured multiple surgeries, first in Santo Domingo and later at Massachusetts General Hospital. Ten men have been sentenced to prison for their roles in the shooting (BOSTON GLOBE, 3/20).

PR CLEAN UP: Amid controversy, former MLBer CURT SCHILLING has declined the Red Sox's invitation to take part in its celebration of the 2004 championship at the team’s home opener on April 9, a source confirmed Tuesday. A source with knowledge of the situation said that Schilling, who angered the Wakefield family and other former teammates by publicly disclosing the late MLBer's private cancer battle days before his death last September, did not want his appearance at the home opener to “serve as a distraction” (MASSLIVE, 3/20).
