Seahawks Reclaim Tickets From Resale Brokers; Effect On Prices For Fans Unknown

The Seahawks last week announced they had recaptured around 1,350 season tickets from known resale brokers, and though "much rejoicing ensued among segments of Seahawks fans," those celebrations "may be short-lived," according to Geoff Baker of the SEATTLE TIMES. When the Seahawks took away broker tickets last year, they seized 4,000 "under the guise of giving back to fans." While some fans got those tickets at face-value prices, most "wound up paying more on the secondary market than the previous season." Last year, the team took 5,000 originally, but sold 1,000 back to "four designated brokers at marked-up prices." Brokers were given 250 season tickets for $100,000, plus the "ensuing face value amount of each seat." Baker: "In other words, the Seahawks 'scalped' the 1,000 seats for $400,000 beyond face value." The Seahawks then "threw in some goodies and called the deals 'sponsorship' packages." One broker said that he was offered "a couple 'worthless' radio ad spots and the opportunity to air one preseason television commercial if he paid for the production costs." The Seahawks "canceled those sponsorship arrangements" this year, and reclaimed the 1,350 tickets from those brokers. The question now is "where those seats will wind up and how it will impact prices paid" by fans (SEATTLE TIMES, 3/14).
