Oh No: Fed Cup Plays Pre-WWII German National Anthem By Mistake

The Fed Cup quarterfinals from Maui's Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch got off to an "astonishingly awful start" yesterday, as the old version of Germany's National Anthem was sung "by mistake." Those lyrics "were changed after WWII." Germany's players "looked at each other in shock," while the small group of German fans "tried to drown out the performance by singing present-day verses." Andrea Petkovic called it "the epitome of ignorance and I never felt more disrespected in my whole life" (HONOLULU STAR-ADVERTISER, 2/12).
