Top AFA, Government Officials Fail To Reach Agreement To Terminate Fútbol Para Todos

Argentine FA Normalization Committee Chair Armando Pérez, San Lorenzo VP Marcelo Tinelli, River Plate President Rodolfo D'Onofrio and Lanús President Nicolás Russo met with Argentina Secretary General of the Presidency Fernando De Andreis "hoping to agree to terms to finalize the Fútbol para Todos contract," according to Alejandro Casar González of LA NACION. The group "was seeking to renew FPT for six more months" in exchange for 900M Argentine pesos ($56.5M), but the government "rejected that proposal" and countered with an offer of 530M Argentine pesos ($33.2M) that would be contingent on "several points: AFA execs signing the rescission of the contract, a Superliga being created and all changes being approved by an assembly" (LA NACION, 1/26). TÉLAM reported Diego Maradona demanded that TV coverage of Argentine football "remain free," as it has been since '09. Maradona "also urged execs to resolve the AFA crisis." He added that FIFA President Gianni Infantino "will not hesitate to cut off Argentine football if an internal agreement between execs is not reached" (TÉLAM, 1/26). DYN reported Boca Juniors President Daniel Angelici said of a possible strike, "If we strike, we will strike for the whole season, and then we will see, but striking for a game or two is not the solution" (DYN, 1/24).
